Everyone knows that moving is one of the most stressful occurrences in a person’s life, right? (Seriously, most Americans say moving is more stressful than getting married or having children.) But it doesn’t have to be quite that bad—all you need is a little thought and a pre-move checklist.
First, months before your move date, make sure you pick a moving company. The last thing you should do is leave selecting your moving company to the last minute. During this same time frame, begin gathering all of your important papers and other personal data and get them all in one place. Being able to place your hands on your paperwork no matter where you are in the move process is invaluable.
Two months out, start the packing blitz. You should gather packing supplies, set up a central repository for packed items, and set a time every day to begin packing, from your least used items (like seasonal items). Also be sure to use this time to donate or sell items you no longer need or want—remember, every item you dispose of is an item you don’t have to pack.
Within your last month, you are coming unto the home stretch. While continuing packing, make sure you’ve taken care of all the other things you’ll need when you arrive. Utilities, insurance, mailing address changes, and school registrations should all be addressed before you arrive if possible. Show up at your new home putting your best foot forward!
