Moving is listed as one of life’s most stressful experiences for a reason—there are a lot of details and tasks that need to be completed in a brief period. However, while you may breathe a sigh of relief when it is over, there are several things that you need to do after you move. Here are just a few.
The first thing you need to do is unpack your essentials. Pro tip: if you pack your essentials into one box and label it, this will be a lot easier and a lot less stressful. Things like toilet paper, toothbrushes, and shampoo belong in this box.
The second thing you need to do is call and make arrangements to get your utilities running. You will often move into an apartment with electricity and water, but you will need to call to get the gas on and internet service. You will find out quickly enough if there is no warm water, but luckily, a few phone calls will solve your problem.
Third, you need to walk around and locate your gas shutoff, fuse box, main water supply shutoff, and any other safety feature. While inspecting your home, also look to ensure you have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide on every level of your home. Ideally, there will also be smoke detectors in every bedroom.
