You finally have the keys to your new Houston home and are staring around at the empty walls in quiet delight. Give yourself a few more seconds, and then it’s time to get to work because there are a few things you can do before the movers arrive to streamline the move-in process.

First of all, unless this was stipulated in closing, make sure you hire a cleaning company to give your new home a new shine before moving in. It will be harder to clean your new home once your furniture arrives.

Second, you need to reserve parking spots for the movers. If you are moving into a suburb, this is likely not an issue, but if your new address is deep in downtown Houston or in an apartment building, it may not be a bad idea to get out there with a few cones.

Third, take off any doors you can to help make moving large items into your home a bit easier. Pro tip: if you had to remove doors to get an item out of your old house, the same will probably need to happen at your new home.

Finally, you need to coordinate with a moving company so that your belongings arrive shortly after your move-in date.
