No matter how prepared you are for the move, if you don’t have your packing supplies handy, you won’t get very far. So it’s important to have everything you need to box, wrap and label your belongings before starting to pack.
Here’s a packing supply checklist to help you get started.
First, you’re going to need lots of boxes. It’s hard to estimate how many boxes you’ll need, so start off with a variety of small, medium, large and extra-large containers.
Second, store up plenty of wrapping material to protect your fragile belongings. Newspaper makes great packing material, and you can get it easily. Ask family and friends to drop off their old newspapers in the weeks leading up to your move. Bubble wrap is another great option for fragile items you don’t want to shift in the box.
Third, invest in labels and packing tape. Use colored sharpies to fill in labels so you can read them easily. You can color code labels to help sort boxes into the right rooms in your new home.
Fourth, consider hiring someone to move heavy items such as furniture, appliances and other large, bulky items. This can prevent injury and let you stay focused on packing.
Fifth, rent or borrow a dolly to move household appliances.
Other items you’ll need are garbage bags, cleaning supplies, a utility knife, rope and rubber bands.
